At Nightingale Hospital London, therapists are able to use a number of therapeutic approaches in order to support patients in an individual way depending on their needs. Below are some of the approaches the therapist may discuss with you.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, known as ACT, is a cognitive behavioural model of psychotherapy that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies mixed with commitment and behaviour-change strategies, to increase psychological flexibility. ACT aims to help individuals clarify their personal values and to take action on them. ACT encourages people to accept their reactions and be present, choose a valued direction and take action.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a psychological therapy for people with borderline personality disorder, especially those with self-harming behaviour or suicidal thoughts.
In DBT, you are taught specific skills on how to control your emotions. The first step is to experience, recognise and accept your emotions. DBT, helps people to change unhelpful ways of thinking and behaving, but it also focuses on accepting who you are at the same time. DBT aims to balance ‘acceptance’ with ‘change’.
A schema describes an organised pattern of thought or behaviour. We all have schemas, some are effective but others cause psychological and emotional problems. Schema Therapy focuses on these unhelpful schemas and offers a way of helping individuals restructure thinking related to their struggles. There are two phases to schema therapy; education and understanding to increase awareness and rehearsing behavioural changes related to the presenting problems to break the disruptive patterns.
The emphasis of Gestalt therapy is on what is being done, thought, and felt at the present moment rather than on what was, might be, could be, or should have been. It is a method of awareness practice, by which perceiving, feeling, and acting are understood to be conducive to interpreting, explaining, and conceptualising.
