Ah, Christmas. The season to eat, drink and be merry. As December approaches, we let our hair down and our belts out, ruefully accepting that an extra couple of inches around the waistline are inevitable. Or are they? Whether you’re planning on slipping into a slinky little New Year’s party number or just want to see in the first day of January minus that heavy, bloated feeling, it is possible to indulge without inviting an off-the-scale disaster – with a little seasonal savvy.

Nothing boosts confidence like feeling comfortable in your own skin. And the good news is, this doesn’t mean you have to possess one of what I refer to as the ‘unattainable three body types’ – naturally lean and willowy, hard-bodied and athletic; or the perfect hourglass figure. ‘Unsurprisingly, aspiring to these body types is potentially damaging to self-esteem” says Dr Bijal Chheda-Varma, a psychologist at the Nightingale Hospital.
