Dr Michael Craig featured in Channel 4’s ‘Davina McCall: Sex, Myths And The Menopause’

Dr Michael Craig, consultant psychiatrist at Nightingale Hospital will feature in Channel 4’s upcoming documentary airing May 12th, Davina McCall: Sex, Myths and The Menopause.

The 60-minute film, fronted by TV presenter Davina McCall, delved into the ‘taboo’ topic of menopause.

McCall explored the lack of understanding and misinformation that surrounds menopause as well as the science and impact it has on women’s health.

As well as opening up about her own journey, McCall sat down with other women from a variety of different backgrounds to hear their personal experiences, in order to prompt a candid discussion. The programme also dispelled the myths, fear and shame surrounding hormone replacement therapy.

The documentary featured expert insight from renowned UK psychiatrist Dr Michael Craig.

Dr Craig is a clinical academic psychiatrist, who also trained in obstetrics and gynaecology; and has a special interest in both perinatal and reproductive psychiatry.

Following the documentary, Dr Craig supported the notion that more needs to be done to support women experiencing menopause.

“In response to the exponential expansion of findings from medical research, postgraduate medical training has become progressively narrowed, with an ever-increasing drive towards super-specialists. This has increased our ability to treat specific disorders more effectively. However, an unforeseen cost has been the reduced ability to treat people with conditions that fail to fit our currently defined specialities. A subgroup that perhaps suffer the most from this systemic failure, includes women with neurological and/or psychiatric conditions triggered at times of hormonal change.”

McCall told Channel 4: “I don’t think I’ve ever worked on a project that has affected me so deeply. I get home after filming and sometimes I just sit down and cry … from deep frustration and anger at how we are failing women. This film isn’t just for menopausal women, it’s for their partners, their fathers, their brothers, and their sons. We’re all in this together. I used to think that menopause was an age thing and now I realise it’s a woman thing. For far too long, there’s been a shroud of embarrassment, shame and fear around this topic, and this is where it stops!”

Davina McCall: Sex, Myths and The Menopause can be watched on Channel 4’s on-demand platform.
