How quickly – and where – do you eat your meals? A recent study has revealed we eat meals twice as fast as we did a decade ago. Now, the average person whizzes through dinner in just NINE minutes. But the rapid pace at which we guzzle our food could have long-lasting health implications, scientists warn. A study at the University of Otago, in New Zealand, found that we are more likely to be obese if we eat quickly. It is also proven to increase the diabetes and frequency of cravings.
Dr Bijal Chheda-Varma, a food psychologist at London’s Nightingale Hospital, said: “It takes around 20 minutes for our brains to realise that our stomachs are full. Eating more slowly should help your waistline but also your wellbeing – and that of your children. Parents who set an example to their kids by eating with them are likely to have children who have better relationships with food.”
