Several experts, including Dr Bijal Chheda-Varma – a psychologist at London’s Nightingale Hospital who has seen first-hand a marked increase in female teen patients with eating disorders, self-harming issues, depression and anxiety – believe the amount of social media interaction among adolescents is also to blame.

Last year, an Ofcom investigation revealed that time spent on the internet by users aged 16-24 has almost trebled in a decade, jumping from 10 hours, 24 minutes a week in 2005 to 27 hours 36 minutes by last year…
