Your heart is pounding, you feel sick and you can’t seem to concentrate on anything – even though you need to start making those vital calls.
Don’t panic, there are plenty of ways to overcome stress.
“Stress is the physical reaction in our body when pressure exceeds our ability to cope” says Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, sleep, energy and stress consultant at Nightingale Hospital London and author of Tired But Wired.
“It’s instinctive and it happens when we start to perceive that we’re no longer in control. It triggers the body’s fight or flight reaction via the primitive part of the brain called the limbic system, or the amygdala. This kicks off a whole cascade of reactions that are mainly mediated by the adrenaline, but there’s also noadrenaline and cortisol in the mix, which kicks in when the stress continues.”
