The Sun – 26 August 2014 – Jagerbombs nearly killed me – with caffeine not alcohol

It is the world’s most popular drug and more than 90 percent of us take it every day.

Yet caffeine does not cure anything, has no nutritional value and is dangerously addictive. Now there are growing concerns that more people are becoming heavily dependent on the stimulant. Some experts report a surge in caffeine-related health problems thanks to the growth in high street coffee sales and the booming demand for energy drinks, sweets and pills.

Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, addiction expert at the Nightingale Hospital in London says “I see lots of people with caffeine addiction problems and it’s not just tea, coffee and energy drinks – many of them are taking caffeine pills too. A lot of my patients just try to keep going by relying on caffeine to get them through the day.”

Dr Ramlakhan, who wrote the book Tired But Wired, also reckons that growing numbers of caffeine addicts are drinking booze at night to wind down.
