While some people thrive on stress, too much can seriously damage your health. of the 12 millions adults in the UK who see their GP with mental health problems each year, most suffer from anxiety or depression and much of this is stress related.

Dr James Arkell, a consultant psychiatrist at Nightingale Hospital in London, recommends mindfulness. He explains: “This is about focusing on what is happening now and not thinking any further ahead. instead of concentrating on a stressful thought, you tune into your breathing and bodily sensations.”

The technique is so popular that the NHS recommends it for stress related disorders such as depression. Dr Arkell adds: “The more you practice, the more you’ll benefit”
