The main purpose of the job

As a healthcare assistant, you will be required to support the professional and multidisciplinary team in the care of patients and the day-to-day management of the nursing department.

In addition, you will be required to provide input on the implementation of specific support tasks with patients and their families. You will also provide feedback to other members of the treatment team regarding the progress of patients, under the direction of a qualified nurse.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Assisting members of the multidisciplinary team in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for patients
  • Participate in the review of patients’ care plans as appropriate in ward rounds, meetings and case conferences, in line with policies and procedures
  • Reporting and recording any changes in the patient’s physical or mental condition to the nurse in charge
  • Liaising with other professionals and agencies as required
  • Escorting patients both internally and externally to the hospital, as required
  • Endeavouring to develop sound professional relationships with patients; to promote active listening and communicate their needs to members of the multidisciplinary team


  • NVQ Level 1 in basic nursing skills
  • Literacy and Numeracy of a GCSE or equivalent standard
  • Previous experience working with people with mental health problems
