The main purpose of the job

Reporting directly to the Head Chef and Sous Chef, the post holder is responsible for delivering high-quality food to our all-day dining restaurant, conference meetings, patient wards and any other catering areas as identified by the line manager.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the catering department 
  • Assisting in leading the kitchen and catering team
  • Providing guidance to junior kitchen staff members
  • Overseeing and organising kitchen stock and ingredients
  • Managing food and product ordering by keeping detailed records minimising waste, plus working with existing systems to improve waste reduction
  • Assist the Head Chef/Sous Chef in the kitchen operation ensuring the hospital’s reputation for food quality is always maintained.

Requirements

The following skills and qualifications are essential:

  • Food hygiene and safety certificate
  • Health and safety certificate
  • Any related nutrition qualification
  • A degree in culinary science or related certificate
  • Has NVQ, level 1 and 2 or city and guilds equivalent in food hygiene
  • 4-star Deluxe (at least) experience working in a large food and beverage operation
  • 1-3 years preparing a full-service restaurant
  • Ability to work as a team and take direction
  • Good verbal communication skills 
  • Regular and punctual attendance
  • Able to work flexibly to meet the needs of the business
  • Significant experience as a chef in hotel, restaurant or high standard of catering service delivery environment (desirable)
  • Previous experience in a healthcare environment (desirable)
