Raymond Dixon, Addictions Counsellor

Raymond Dixon

Lead Addiction Counsellor

My professional qualifications, accreditations and memberships:

  • MSc Addiction Psychology & Counselling
  • Certificate CBT

My professional experience:

I work as a Counsellor and particularly in the field of addictions and the problems that drugs, alcohol or problem gambling cause. I specialise in Addictions and Alcohol treatments for clients and their families, having worked at the Nightingale Hospital London for 14 years, now running the Addictions Units and programmes. I have extensive experience in running groups and individual therapy, both for the client, families and partners. I have worked in California at various treatment centres dealing with clients with Chrystal Meth/Cocaine/Cannabis/Alcohol and gambling problems. I also visited various American treatment centres to study methods of therapeutic approach. I have specialised in cannabis/skunk users and problem gamblers, but have also dealt extensively with General Mental Health Disorders such as Depression, Anxiety, Anger Management, Family and Partner issues and Motivational problems.

My personal statement:

I utilise an integrative therapeutic approach combining CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), MET (Motivational Enhancement Therapy), and the Minnesota Model where appropriate. I have completed supplementary courses in Relapse Prevention and Brief Solution Based Therapy. I believe that the treatment of addictions should be based around education and motivation, and should also deal with other underlying or co-existing conditions, such as depression, anxiety, low self esteem, anger, relationship problems and lack of motivation.

Additional information about my research, publications and interests:

I am a practised presenter and have given presentations to Mental Health Professionals and GPs’ on Addiction and Pathological Gambling both here and in America. I have also given feedback on addictions to newspaper articles and radio interviews.
