Professional statement

Following psychiatric training at the Maudsley Hospital and three years as a university lecturer in clinical psychiatry at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School; Dr Christopher McEvedy has been a consultant psychiatrist since 1996. He was initially a general adult and liaison psychiatrist at St Mary’s Hospital, and in recent years as a liaison psychiatrist at UCLH.  Between times, he was for a number of years the lead consultant on intensive care wards covering a busy inner-city catchment area, accepting for treatment patients subject to ongoing criminal proceedings.

He deals routinely with issues of risk assessment and management.

Following retirement from the NHS, Dr McEvedy became an Honorary Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist at University College London Hospital and continues to have a clinic within the gastroenterology department.

Personal statement

Dr McEvedy has broad experience over the full range of psychiatric disorders, in their assessment and in management, working in cooperation and alongside colleagues in therapy disciplines.

His main focus of interest is in the treatment of patients with mood disorders, and in those with a combination of psychological and functional physical health symptoms.

His practice starts with the conviction that a rigid division between mind and body is both unfounded and unhelpful.  The interactions between physical and psychological states may be both subtle and complex.  However, with good evidence-based interventions, it is very often possible to understand these better and most importantly to influence those interactions, to better control unhelpful behaviour, thoughts and feelings and so reduce symptoms and bring about improvement.

He also has the considerable medical-legal experience, in civil (capacity, personal injury, employment, asylum, housing), criminal, childcare, and tribunal cases. He has worked for both prosecution and defence in criminal cases and for both claimant and defence in civil cases. He has given evidence as an expert witness on around 40-50 occasions.  Annually, he prepares around 100 reports in civil and criminal cases.

Additional information about research, publications and interests

In earlier years, Dr McEvedy published in the area of schizophrenia, but more recently has carried out audit work in liaison psychiatry, the interaction of functional symptoms and mental health in gastroenterology and the presentation of alcohol problems in the general hospital.

His interests are in the treatment of patients with mood disorders, and in those with a combination of psychological and functional physical health symptoms.  However, he also has broad experience over the range of psychiatric diagnosis, and in managing the full range of psychiatric disorders in alliance with colleagues in therapy disciplines.
