Clinical Psychologists aim to reduce psychological distress and enhance psychological wellbeing, working collaboratively with people across a diverse range of mental health issues.
They work in many different areas of therapy. Depending on the needs of a person they may use psychodynamic therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Interpersonal Therapy. Applying one or more ways of working with the patient, a clinical psychologist addresses thought, feelings and behaviours within the context of a therapeutic relationship. They may also provide psychometric testing.
The aim for a patient working with a clinical psychologist is to clarify underlying causes of a particular issue and to develop skills for responding to difficult and problematic behaviours. This process is likely to facilitate insight and growth if the patient is motivated to change.
