The importance of minimising and managing stress, depression, anxiety and mental health issues in the workplace is fast becoming a priority for many employers as these conditions can lead to poor productivity and conflict in the workplace.

The Institute of Directors (2008) estimates that the misuse of alcohol and drugs at work costs British industry £2.8bn a year. The HSE reported that throughout 2007, employees experiencing illnesses associated with stress, depression or anxiety took an average of 30 days off work, resulting in huge costs estimated to be in excess of £690m.

Capio Nightingale Hospital has a dedicated team which specialises in the treatment of stress, depression and anxiety. We work closely with employers’ HR and occupation health departments to put together the best treatment plans for staff with mental health issues. When issues are addressed at an early stage, treatment can often be delivered while the employee continues to work. In cases where this may not be possible, our goal is to minimise the period of absence and provide support for a speedy return to work.

We also offer educational and training programmes for leaders, managers and staff on how to spot and manage mental health issues in the workplace. These programmes cover:

  • Stress management
  • Work/life balance
  • Conflict resolution
  • Anger management
  • Sleep and energy management
  • Relationship counselling (bullying/harassment)
  • Return to work support
  • Post-traumatic stress
