Being young carries with it a range of particular stresses and difficulties.
We are leaders in the treatment of young people aged 12-18 who are suffering from an Eating Disorder.
Staff at Capio NIghtingale Hospital are specialists in child and adolescent care and therapy, and are sensitive to the issues that can affect young people. In some cases, they will help to address mental health issues alongside an Eating Disorder such as personality or developmental difficulties.
Whatever the challenges facing a young person, The child and adolescent unit is a sanctuary to guide them towards feeling better and staying well.
To help our residents we use a range of psychological therapies - including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, family assessment and therapy, individual and group therapy sessions, verbal and non-verbal approaches, occupational therapy and both formal and informal education.
We strongly encourage the participation of family, and local health and social care professionals, in devising and delivering plans in conjunction with young patients and staff at Capio Nightingale. We also work closely with families and provide assessment and ongoing therapy, post-discharge, where appropriate.
The specialist Child and Adolscent Psychiatry unit at Capio Nightingale Hospital operates as a community and all activities and therapies aim at building confidence, self esteem and social skills in young people.
It is located on a floor of the main hospital. The floor provides a completely self contained environment for young people and is light and spacious, and offers the highest standard of accomodation in modern, bright facilities.
All patients have their own bedroom with toilet, and some are fully en-suite. Male and female patients’ bedrooms occupy separate areas of the floor.
The hospital offers a comprehensive programme of activities, including full school curriculum during normal term time and a summer school in the long break. Activities are led by the multi-disciplinary staff team with additional input where required from external experts in drama, music and art.
We have developed a unique partnership with St Marylebone CE School, a local school that is highly rated by Ofsted. The education programme is delivered in part and supported by their teachers. As a result our patients have access to a unique range of facilites, equipment and material that would not ordinarily be available in a hospital setting.
In addition, the hospital offers a full curriculum including teaching for Key Stage 3 and 4 and provide a 16+ skills programme. Our teaching staff support young people in preparation for exams and other tests so that they can remain on track with their existing educational programme.
During admission we work closely with individual schools to facilitate reintegration as part of an agreed programme for the young person.
