1. Choose a sober time to raise your concerns

2. Tell them you are concerned about their health and want to help

3. Point out where problems are occurring; relationships, work, money

4. Tell them what you miss about how they use to be

5. Ask if they would like help

6. Do not lend them money

7. Do not phone work/university/college for them saying they are sick

8. Do not make excuses for their alcoholic behaviours and accidents

9. Don’t let their drink derail your life

10. Be prepared that despite all the mood swings and drunken behaviour, they will deny they have a problem
