Biography

Dr Gerald Woolfson graduated in medicine at Cape Town University in 1954. He trained in psychiatry at the Maudsley and St Georges Hospitals. He worked at Springfield Hospital and St Georges Hospital as a consultant subsequently and then as a consultant psychiatrist from 1969 at the Hammersmith St Charles and Springfield Hospitals and St Mary's Hospital. He was an Honorary Senior Lecturer and recognized teacher at London University and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, the Hammersmith Hospital, St Charles and St Mary's Hospitals and a Consultant Psychotherapist to the Home Office at HM Prison Holloway London. He acted as an Ombudsman to the Police Force between 1995 and 2005. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatry and holds the DPM England and Honorable Mention in the Gaskell Gold Medal and Prize of the Royal College of Psychiatry.

He has been in full time private practice since 1990 and was the Medical Director of the Capio Nightingale Hospital in Chelsea and remains an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at St Charles and St Mary's Hospital. He is recognized under section 12 (of the Mental Heath Act 1983) and conducts his private practice at 17 Wimpole Street, London, W1g 8GB. His areas of special expertise include:

  • Accurate diagnosis of illness throughout the total psychiatric spectrum
  • A broad knowledge of forensic psychiatry and the preparation of medico-legal reports
  • Specialist management and therapy skills including CBT and dynamic psychotheraphy in the treatment of all the major neurosis including obsessional paranoid, anxiety, depression and personality disorders.
  • Management of drug addiction and alcohol related problems.
  • Disagnosis and management of major psychosis for example schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
  • Marital and personality problems.
  • Post-traumatic stress related disorders.

He has written a Handbook of Psychiatry which is in its eigth edition and a monograph on Recent Advances in the Anxiety states. He is currently preparing a textbook on the nature and treatment of complex antisocial personality disorders.
