Warning signs of teenage drug abuse
Physical: Lasting fatigue, repeated health complaints, red and dull eyes, and a steady cough.
Emotional: Personality change, sudden mood changes, irresponsible behaviour, low self-esteem, depression, and a general lack of interest.
Family: Starting arguments, breaking rules or withdrawing from the family.
School: Drop in grades, many absences and discipline problems.
Social problems: New friends who are less interested in standard home and school activities, problems with the law and changes to less conventional styles in dress and in music.
Some of these warning signs can also be signs of other problems.
Consulting a physician to rule out physical causes of the warning signs is a good first step. This should often be followed or accompanied by a comprehensive evaluation by a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
An effective way for parents to show care and concern for their teenager is to honestly discuss the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs with them.
Alcohol and drug addiction
in young people
We have specialist experience of working with children and adolescents
Many teenagers have some experience with alcohol and drugs. The majority will experiment then stop, or continue casual use without significant problems.
Some young people may use drugs or alcohol regularly and start to experience varying degrees of physical, emotional or social problems.
Legally available products include alcohol and tobacco, prescribed medications, inhalants and over-the-counter cough, cold, sleep and diet medication. Illegal drugs include marijuana, cocaine, crack, ecstasy, LSD, PCP, opioids, heroin and ‘designer drugs’.
Those who begin to smoke and drink during their early teens are at particularly high risk.
