Our history
Florence Nightingale was Superintendent at the Hospital for Sick Gentlewomen at 1 Harley Street between August 1853 and October 1854. She left to go to the Crimea on 21 October 1854.
Upper Harley Street was rebuilt in 1912 and the site is now 90 Harley Street. The Hospital moved to the building in Marylebone and was named The Florence Nightingale Hospital.
It became a private psychiatric hospital in 1987 and was purchased by the Capio group in 1999.
Florence Nightingale (1820 dash 1910) is regarded by many as the founder of modern nursing. She set a standard for compassion in nursing, patient care and hospital administration. In addition to her views on hygiene which are well known, Florence Nightingale believed in the effect of physical health on mental health. She also believed in the importance of a healing and therapeutic environment on recovery.
We believe that Florence Nightingale would have been proud of the care provided in her name at Capio Nightingale.
